LESS IS MORE: Saturday play

3-22 KELSO

Bit of a sloppy one Friday and at the risk of ending the week and the month a little anticlimactically, I take a chance here too which may or may not prove a wise way to go. This is the sort of race I would relish when in form so if you’d take yesterday away, I would go in bullish. Nothing I like more than taking on an odds on shot.

The negatives about Definitely Red are not many. He’s short favourite for a reason and could well make a monkey of me against what the tissue market considers a pretty beatable opposition.

I see four maybes however – if they all four come here – and it will only need Definitely Red to be a little below to let one of the others in with a chance. Kauto Riko and Saint Xavier the obvious ones. The former if he stays the extra distance and the latter if he can transfer his French form to these conditions. Nicholls sends Saint Xavier a long way for the privilege and the whole play muddied by the fact that both he and Definitely Red are also entered at Doncaster so the weather may yet have its say.

My main reason for playing though are the Sandy Thomson entries. His presumed number one jockey Ryan Mania sits aboard Dimple which is the only reason I give that one any chance. Can’t really see why he wouldn’t ride the stable star unless of course this is just a blow the cobwebs ride for Seeyouatmidnight after nearly two years off the track. Could well be and paddock watch required really here. Ran lame in the Grand National when last seen and was a to follow horse for me in some big races prior to that including when beating Bristol De Mai. And that’s why I play. On the maybe that he is back to that sort of shape. If he is, he gives Definitely Red a right race on a direct formline as Definitely Red has finished behind Bristol de Mai. That’s the third in last year’s Gold Cup. Seeyouatmidhight beat him in a race I remember well. Just the two of them and there was shenanigans in a tactical affair but Seeyouatmidnight advertised himself as a possible biggie which was huge for the Sandy Thomson yard at the time. Hasn’t come to pass and he’s 12 now. The fact that he comes back at all is why I support him. I nearly played just the back on him but looking at the race and the fact that Brian Hughes sticks with Kauto Riko means that there is cover in those two too and this is indeed an LIM race worthy of taking the supposed good thing on.

Ought to be there to watch it really but having to give the jaunt up to Kelso a miss for reasons explained yesterday. And thus just a small play. An intriguing one though.

After which egg or cheshire cream will be on my face!

 Good Luck with your bets.

The BOZmail golden rules:

1/ Try to look where others do not.

2/ Make sure your selections are as good as you can get them(the boz’s job here)

3/ Get your staking right (up when confident – down when less so or when managing bank)

4/ Do all in your power to get best price available(whether that be using price comparison sites or using partial staking techniques on the exchanges when unsure which way a price might go. Be careful not to take exchange ‘silly prices’ if you are going in early on a lay price or if a specified low lay tissue price goes on a significant drift. Always check bookmaker tissue prices first to get a guide on what to expect from the market if it is not yet properly formed on the exchanges. The recommendation is always to secure a price (if possible) when actually placing the lay bet. Your discretion based on personal form study and watching the markets develop also encouraged to ensure you maximise returns. The staking advices are a general rather than rigid dictate – mainly for the less experienced and those not able to spend time watching markets develop and practising the optimum betting time skill. Remember also that a lay price available at a significantly lower level than stated on the sheet offers opportunity to increase lay stake without increasing calculated safe lay liability. This can be a key profit optimising tool in the long term if your form study agrees with that published by The Boz.

5/ Always keep in mind the long term ‘importance of  breaking even’ philosophy and practice. This is very much used by The Boz in his staking advices and is recommended in your betting practices – especially during the down spells – in order to maintain a healthy and consistent bank.

6/ Always remember the BOZ does traditionally suffer from Murphys Law. If he expresses his opinion but states that he won’t be betting on it himself and isn’t making it an official tip, remember that historically these can be his best advices! The 2019 Grand National opinion expressed paid a £2,260-93 tricast for a £60 (£1×60) permed stake (five selections).

7/ Never accept an overall loss. This has been the BOZ’s mantra for 22 years. The year the BOZmail posts an overall loss is the year he packs in.

“I play cautiously and strategically with bank management always in mind.”  Boz
