SUNDAY JANUARY 10th 2021
EXTENSION DAY 10:
I set Saturday up to watch tennis thinking that the weather would scupper most of the good racing! Well I got that wrong but still managed a couple of sneaks in at Abu Dhabi and had a couple of tennis LIMs lined up for Sunday just in case. As it has turned out, I quite like the horse racing qualifier at Southwell so I’ll stick with that but I’ll mention my two tennis fancies as well just in case a few of you are getting to share my passion for that now! Good practice also for the upcoming Australian Open which starts on February 8th and will be covered in full on the new 2021 BOZmail cycle for those that have signed up to that.
First woman to watch is the new sensation from Russia – 21 year old Anastasia Gasanova – who blitzed No.1 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-2 6-4 in the match I watched and I have to say she was mighty impressive. Serve is strong and she broke the Pliskova serve 4 times in the match. Jot her down in your notebook pronto. That was her first win against a current top 100 player but all the signs she could back that up were there and she plays Sara Torribes Sormo on Sunday and is 3.55 in the two horse race. The Spaniard is very much a clay courter so has to be vulnerable to the Russian serve and forehand which whips through. 1.35 the lay on Sorribes Tormo which will be my starting position with the proviso to trade in play if I get chance.
The other match I fancy against the book is Tunisian Ons Jabeur at 3.0 to beat Aryina Sabalenka who can be laid at 1.5. Wily and subtle Jabeur has been on a huge upward curve for the past two years after coming back from a mid career injury that held her back for a long time. Sabalenka the young powerhouse ranked 10 in the world now but always vulnerable to a thinker who doesn’t panic against her. I think Jabeur could well be that on current form.
Back to the horses and the all weather though for the LIM. This handicap at Southwell has Nortonthorpe Boy very short at 6/5 going for his hat trick but first time on this surface and with penalties to carry. Luke Morris will throw his usual kitchen sink no doubt but a protracted duel with Johnston’s Desert Boots looks possible as Curtis and Morris renew their regular hammer and tong rivalry which I think might set it up for Swinton Noon who likes the track and gets a 3lb extra weight allowance from Theo Ladd. Much depends on the young jockey’s ride but he’s ok and was on for the last win and if he’s clever could defy penalty to win again. David Simcock’s Woke Media gives further LIM cover and cannot be ruled out.
0.15pt LAY on NORTONTHORPE BOY (around 2.2)
0.05pt BACK on SWINTON NOON (around 5.5)
Was the play on Saturday with that meeting surviving its inspection. Well done if you only backed the first and those who joined me in backing both take a rap on the knuckles for lack of discipline! The rule of one LIM per day is there for a reason and the art is getting it down to the best one on offer. So speaks BOZ the tipster whilst BOZ the gambler is whingeing about how unlucky we were with Imperial Aura falling and Master Tommytucker surviving a serious horlicks at the last again to land his stable gamble. With hindsight, I got that play all wrong but you still won’t get me backing Master TommyTucker over Imperial Aura in future! MrTT has a fabulous engine but like Kauto Star before him, doesn’t have the greatest respect for his fences. One doubts they’ll ever knock that out of him!
I start for Saturday by pointing you to the 3-50 Chepstow if that meeting passes its 8am inspection. I do think Dame du Soir has a fair chance on the likely heavy/dead ground of beating McCain’s Whiteoak Fleur – who will need to jump better than she did LTO – and so a 0.1pt Lay on the fav and a 0.05pt BACK on Bridgewater’s mare would be my play.
